XML DOM | Element Object getAttributeNodeNS Method

Hello folks! welcome back to a new edition of our tutorial on XML DOM. In this tutorial, we are going to be studying about the XML DOM Element Object getAttributeNodeNS Method.

The XML DOM getAttributeNodeNS Method is used to retrieve an Attr node by the local name and namespace URI.


The following below is the syntax to use the XML DOM getAttributeNodeNS method -

elementObj.getAttributeNodeNS(namespace,  nodeName)

Parameter Details

S.No.Parameter & Description


Is a string specifying the namespace of the attribute.



Is a string specifying the name of the attribute.

Return Value

This method returns an Attr node for the specified attribute.


Following are the node_ns.xml contents -

   <Employee xmlns:e = "http://www.webdesigntutorialz.com/technical/" category = "technical">
      <e:FirstName   e:lang = "en">Kennedy</e:FirstName>
   <Employee xmlns:n = "http://www.webdesigntutorialz.com/non-technical/" category = "non-technical">
      <n:FirstName n:lang = "en">Stephanie</n:FirstName>

The example below illustrates the usage of Element Object getAttributeNodeNS method -

         function loadXMLDoc(filename) {
            if (window.XMLHttpRequest) {
               xhttp = new XMLHttpRequest();
            } else // code for IE5 and IE6 {
               xhttp = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
            return xhttp.responseXML;
         xmlDoc = loadXMLDoc("/dom/node_ns.xml");
         x = xmlDoc.getElementsByTagName("FirstName")[0];
         var attributenodens = x.getAttributeNodeNS(ns,"lang")
         document.write("nodename: "+attributenodens.nodeName);
         document.write("<br>nodevalue: "+attributenodens.nodeValue);


Save this file as elementmethod_getattributenodens.html on the server's path (this file and node_ns.xml should be on the same path in your server). This is going to give us the following output below -

nodename: e:lang
nodevalue: en
