The XML DOM Element Object setAttribute method is used to set a new attribute value to the existing element.


The following below is the syntax to use the setAttribute method -

It holds the name of the attribute to retrieve.

Return Value

This XML DOM method returns the updated value of the attribute.


Following are the node.xml contents -

   <Employee category = "Technical">

The following example illustrates the usage of the Element Object setAttribute method -

         function loadXMLDoc(filename) {
            if (window.XMLHttpRequest) {
               xhttp = new XMLHttpRequest();
            } else // code for IE5 and IE6 {
               xhttp = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");

         xmlDoc = loadXMLDoc("/dom/node.xml");

         x = xmlDoc.getElementsByTagName('Employee');
         for(i = 0;i < x.length;i++) {

Save this file as elementmethod_setattribute.html on the server's path (this file and node.xml should be on the same path in your server). This is going to give us the following output below -
