XML DOM - setNamedItemNS Method

Hello folks! welcome back to a new edition of our tutorial on XML DOM. In this tutorial, we are going to be studying about the XML DOM setNamedItemNS Method.

The XML DOM setNamedItemNS method is used to add a node by using its nodeName attribute. If a node with that name already exist in this map, it is replaced by the new one.

The following below is the syntax to use the XML DOM setNamedItemNS Method -

Parameter Details

S.No.Parameter & Description

This store the node in the map. This node value can be accessed later using the values of its namespaceURI or localNameattribute. It is of type node.

Return Value

This method returns the new node value.

Following below are the node.xml contents -

<?xml version ="1.0"?>
   <Employee  xmlns:e = "http://www.webdesigntutorialz.com/technical/" category = "technical">
      <e:FirstName e:language = "English">Kennedy</e:FirstName>
   <Employee xmlns:n = "http://www.webdesigntutorialz.com/non-technical/" category = "non-technical">

The following example illustrates the usage of the setNamedItemNS method -

<!DOCTYPE html>
         function loadXMLDoc(filename) {
            if (window.XMLHttpRequest) {
                xhttp = new XMLHttpRequest();
            } else // code for IE5 and IE6 {
                xhttp = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
            return xhttp.responseXML;
         xmlDoc = loadXMLDoc("/dom/node_ns.xml");

         c = xmlDoc.createAttributeNS("http://www.webdesigntutorialz.com/technical/",'language');
         c.value = "CEO";
         y = xmlDoc.getElementsByTagName('e:FirstName')[0].attributes;
         document.write("Set named Item NS value is : ")

Save this file as namednodemapmethod_setnameditemns.html on the server path (this file and node.xml should be on the same path in your server). This gives us the following output below -

Set named Item NS value is : CEO
