XML DOM - setNamedItem Method

Hello folks! welcome back to a new edition of our tutorial on XML DOM. In this tutorial, we are going to be studying about the XML DOM setNamedItem Method.

The XML DOM setNamedItem method adds a node by using its nodeName attribute. If a node with that name is already available in the map, it is replaced by the new one.

The following below is the syntax to use the XML DOM setNamedItem Method -

Parameter Details

S.No.Parameter & Description

This store the node in the map. This node value can be accessed later using the nodeName attribute. It is of type node.

Return Value

This method returns the new updated value of the node if the existing node is replaced, otherwise it returns null.

Following below are the node.xml contents -

<?xml version = "1.0"?>
   <Employee category = "Technical">
   <Employee category = "Non-Technical">
   <Employee category = "Management">

The following example illustrates the usage of the setNamedItem method -

<!DOCTYPE html>
         function loadXMLDoc(filename) {
            if (window.XMLHttpRequest) {
                xhttp = new XMLHttpRequest();
            } else // code for IE5 and IE6 {
                xhttp = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
            return xhttp.responseXML;
         xmlDoc = loadXMLDoc("/dom/node.xml");

         c = xmlDoc.createAttribute("category");
         c.value = "WebDesignTutorialz";
         y = xmlDoc.getElementsByTagName('Employee')[0].attributes;
         document.write("Set named Item value is : ")

Save this file as namednodemapmethod_setnameditem.html on the server path (this file and node.xml should be on the same path in your server). This gives us the following output below -

Set named Item value is : WebDesignTutorialz
