The DocumentType name attribute returns the name of the DTD which is immediately written next to the keyword !DOCTYPE.
Syntax
The following below is the syntax to use the XML DOM DocumentType name Attribute -
documentObj.doctype.name
Return Value
It returns the name of the DTD immediately written next to the keyword !DOCTYPE.
Example
Following are the address_internal_dtd.xml contents -
<?xml version = "1.0" encoding = "UTF-8" standalone = "no"?> <!DOCTYPE address [ <!ELEMENT address (name,company,phone)> <!ELEMENT name (#PCDATA)> <!ELEMENT company (#PCDATA)> <!ELEMENT phone (#PCDATA)> ]> <address> <name>Nkpara Kennedy</name > <company>WebDesignTutorialz</company> <phone>(011) 123-4567</phone> </address>
The following example illustrates the usage of the DocumentType name attribute -
<!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <script> function loadXMLDoc(filename) { if (window.XMLHttpRequest) { xhttp = new XMLHttpRequest(); } else // code for IE5 and IE6 { xhttp = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } xhttp.open("GET",filename,false); xhttp.send(); return xhttp.responseXML; } </script> </head> <body> <script> xmlDoc = loadXMLDoc("/dom/address_internal_dtd.xml"); document.write("The name next to the keyword doctype is:"+ xmlDoc.doctype.name); </script> </body> </html>
Output
Save this file as documenttype_name.html on the web server's path (this file and the address_internal_dtd.xml should be on the same path in your server). This is going to give us the following output below -
The name next to the keyword doctype is: address
