PHP closedir() Function

Hello folks! welcome back to a new edition of our tutorial on PHP. In this tutorial guide, we are going to be discussing about the PHP closedir() Function.

The built-in PHP closedir() function closes the directory stream indicated by dir_handle. The stream must have previously been opened by built-in PHP opendir() function.


Following below is the syntax to use this function -

void closedir ( resource $dir_handle );

Parameter Details

The directory handle resource previously opened with opendir().

Return Value

This built-in PHP function returns TRUE on success or FALSE on failure.


Try out the below example -

   $dir = opendir("/var/www/images");
   while (($file = readdir($dir)) !== false) {
      echo "filename: " . $file . "<br />";


When the above code is executed, it will produce the following result -

filename: .
filename: ..
filename: logo.gif
filename: mohd.gif
