Python String startswith() Method with example

Hello dear readers! Welcome back to another edition of our tutorial on Python. In this tutorial guide, we are going to be studying about the Python String startswith() method.

Python string startswith() method checks whether the string starts with str, and optionally restricting matching with the given indices start and end.


The following below is the syntax for the Python String startswith() method -

str.startswith(str,  beg=0,  end=len(string) );

Parameter Details

  • str - This is the string to be checked.
  • end - This is the optional parameter to end start index of the matching boundary.

Return Value

Returns True if found matching string, otherwise it returns False.


The following below is a simple example -


str = "this is string example....wow!!!";
print str.startswith( 'this' )
print str.startswith( 'is', 2, 4 )
print str.startswith( 'this', 2, 4 )
