Python String rindex() Method with example

Hello dear readers! Welcome back to another edition of our tutorial on Python. In this tutorial guide, we are going to be discussing about the Python String rindex() method.

The Python string rindex() method returns the last index where the substring str is found, or it raises an exception if no such index exists, optionally restricting the search to [beg:end].


The following below is the syntax for Python String rindex() method -

str.rindex(str,  beg = 0,  end = len(string) )

Parameter Details

  • str- This specifies the string to be searched.
  • beg - The is the starting index. By default its 0.
  • end - This is the ending index. By default it is equal to the length of the string.

Return Value

Returns the last index if found, otherwise raises an exception if str is not found.


The following below is a simple example -


str1 = "this is string example....wow!!!";
str2 = "is";

print str1.rindex(str2)
print str1.index(str2)
