Hello folks! want to welcome you all to our brand new tutorial series on WordPress. We are going to be taking you guys all through from the scratch and before the end of this tutorial series, we believe that you should have the necessary knowledge needed to build up your own beautiful WordPress website.

What is WordPress?

WordPress can simply be defined as an open source and content management system(CSM), which allows the users to build dynamic websites and blogs. Best known to me, till date WordPress is the most popular blogging platform that is available in the web and supports updating, customizing, as well as management of the website from the back-end CMS.

What is Content Management System?

The Content Management System ( CMS ) is a software that stores all of the website's data such as texts, photos, musics, documents, etc. And is made available on your website. CMS also helps in editing, publishing and modifying the site's contents.

WordPress was initially released on the 27th of May 2003 by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little. It was announced as an open source in October 2009.


Features

Below are some of the features of WordPress -

  • User Management - It allows managing user information such as to change the role of the users to (subscribers, contributors, authors, editor or administrators), create or delete user, reset password or the user information. The main role of a user manager is Authentication.
  • Media Management - This feature is used for managing media files and folders, in which you can easily upload, organize and as well manage media files on your website.
  • Importers - This allows the importation of files in form of posts. It imports custom files, various pages, tags and comments.
  • Search Engine Optimization - It provides several search engine optimization tool that makes On-page SEO easy.
  • Theme System - This allows modifying the website view and functionality. It includes images, Css, template files and custom pages.
  • Multilingual - This feature lets translation of the entire content to the language that is preferred by the user.
  • Availability of Plugins - A lot of plugins used to provide custom functions are made available.

Advantages of WordPress

Below are the few advantages made available for this tutorial -

  1. It is an open source platform and available for free.
  2. There are many cool plugins and templates that are made available for free.
  3. Media files can be uploaded quickly and easily.
  4. Css files can be modified according to design based on users need.
  5. It provides several SEO tools which makes On page SEO very easy to perform.
  6. Customization is very easy according to the users needs.
  7. It is easy to edit the content as it makes use of WYSIWYG editor. (What You See Is What You Get is a user interface which allows the users to manipulate the layout of the document without having a layout command).
  8. It allows creating different roles for users of the website such as admin, contributor, author.



Disadvantages of WordPress
Below are the few disadvantages of WordPress made available in this tutorial -

  1. Several plugins can make the website heavy to load and run.
  2. PHP knowledge is required in order to make changes or modifications in the website.
  3. Modifying and formatting the graphic images and tables is difficult.
  4. Some times software needs to be updated in order to keep the WordPress up to date with the current web browser and mobile devices. Updating the WordPress version can lead to loss of data, so a backup copy of the website is needed after the backup.
